Vietnam sees no less than third in SEA Games
NHA TRANG CITY, Vietnam – Vietnam is eyeing no less than a top three finish in the 26th Southeast Asian Games slated Nov. 11-24 in Palembang and Jakarta, Indonesia.
Vietnam sports official Lam Quang Thanh told Viet Nam News, an English newspaper here, that since his country is competing in 36 of the 45 events calendared in the biennial meet, they’re eyeing a minimum of 70 gold medals which should be good enough for a spot in the top three.
Lam said his country, which is looking to win the medals in football and martial arts events like vovinam, karate, wushu, taekwondo and judo, is expected to contend with host Indonesia, traditional powerhouse Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, not bothering to mention the Philippines.
If the Filipino officials would be right in their predictions, the country would win 55 gold medals which could only be good for fifth or sixth place overall.
The SEAG-bound Phl team hasn’t actually finalized its roster as some of the NSAs are still scrounging for private funding.
Businessmen Manny V. Pangilinan and Marty Eizmendi offered to bankroll the trip of some teams seeing action in Indonesia.
Three days ago, Smart and PLDT chairman Pangilinan pledged P10 million for the participation of athletes from basketball, boxing, football, badminton, tennis, cycling and taekwondo while Eizmendi agreed to finance the national baseball team’s Palembang trip, reportedly shelling out P2 million.
The Philippine Sports Commission has only allocated P30 million for the SEA Games, which is just enough to fund 424 athletes and 140 officials.
But there are 110 more Filipino athletes and 21 officials (technical, medical and administrative) knocking on the doors, and they include those from baseball, futsal, bridge (13), sports climbing (11), judo (3), fencing (3), badminton (3), athletics (2), gymnastics (2), golf (2) and cycling (1).

MANILA, Philippines—There’s no cause for alarm as far as far as the country’s Southeast Asian Games participation in Indonesia next month.
Contrary to reports of unfinished venues and billeting woes in the Games’ hub Palembang, Philippine deputy chief de mission Romeo Magat Sunday said those problems have been addressed by the Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc).
“There’s no need to panic. Everything is in order,” said Magat, who went to host cities Jakarta and Palembang to inspect the venues and get a clear picture of Inasoc’s preparation for the Nov. 11 TO 22 meet.
“They assured us that all competition sites will be 100 percent ready before the games. In fact, I even saw the venues in question and I think they’re in good shape,” added the secretary general of the Philippine Tennis Association.
The Philippine Olympic Committee had earlier expressed concern upon receiving information that the construction of the aquatics center in Palembang has been painfully slow along with the renovation of venues for athletics, shooting, beach volleyball and baseball, among others.
Regarding the accommodation, Magat said Inasoc will put up two floating hotels with 750 rooms each on the river near the Jakabaring Sports City in Palembang to house athletes and officials who could be displaced from the athletes’ village.
“It’s an extremely expensive substitute for hotel shortage,” said Magat.
The athletes’ village could only make room for 2,200 athletes, a third of the projected total number of athletes from 11 countries and 42 sports expected to flock for the biennial games.
Team Philippines alone has 534 athletes, 110 of them privately funded, accompanied by 161 officials composed of coaches, trainers, managers, medical and administrative staff.
The Jakabaring Sports City plays host to 19 sports while 22 sports will be staged in separate venues in Jakarta.
Magat said accommodation has never been an issue in Jakarta as well as the completion of its venues but athletes and officials should brace for a logistical nightmare owing to the notorious traffic and the location of competition sites.

Indonesia to deploy over 10,000 security guards to secure SEA Games
JAKARTA (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is to deploy 10,886 armed forces officers during the Southeast Asian games (SEA Games) from Nov. 11-22, police said here on Monday.The officers comprised of about 6,886 policemen, 3,000 military officers and 1,000 local security guards, said Sujarno, head of bureau of personal of the Jakarta police headquarters.
"The security would be done from the hotels where the athletes and officials stay up to the location of the competition," he said at the police headquarters.
Sujarwo said that a meeting involving all shareholders, including the police, military and the committee of the games would be held to coordinate the work.
So far, terrorism was still the main threat of the games, he said.
"The threat of terrorism is still the main priority of the integrated security during the SEA Games in Indonesia," said Sujarwo.
Indonesia has been hit by a series of small-scale terrorist strikes for the last two years, killing tens of people and wounding dozen others.
The police said that mass gathering was still the main target of the militants.
Thousands of athletes and officials from eleven Southeast Asian countries are to come to Indonesia to take part in the games.
The Southeast Asia Games is a biennial multi-sport events involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The games is under regulation of the Southeast Asian Games Federation with supervision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia.
Indonesian Sports and Youth Minister Andi Mallarangeng said he was optimistic that the preparations for the Southeast Asia Games would meet the deadline despite problems in the construction of almost all the venues.
Many have expressed doubts over preparations for the games. Three sporting venues, for swimming, athletics and shooting, are still in the construction phase.

"Jumlah ATM berjalan yang dibutuhkan masih kita hitung, tapi beberapa unit ATM berjalan yang ada di daerah-daerah akan ditarik ke Jakarta dan Palembang," kata Zulkifli.

Secara terpisah, Menpora Andi A Mallarangeng tetap optimistis SEA Games XXVI/2011 dapat berlangsung sesuai jadwal yaitu 11-22 November 2011. "Berdasarkan laporan yang saya terima, pembangunan venue di Jakarta dan Palembang dapat diselesaikan bulan Oktober ini," ungkapnya.

Downpour delays SEA Games construction
The recent downpour in Palembang, South Sumatra, left behind numerous puddles at the Jakabaring Sport City, future site of the 2011 SEA Games, proving that the drainage system in the complex was not fully functional.
Puddles formed on the tracks between the aquatic and athletic arena even when there was no rain, which can damage the newly planted grass.
According to SEA Games Arena Construction Committee chairman Rizal Abdullah, the puddles were proof that the gutters did not work well.
"We are thankful for the rain because it has indirectly tested the preparedness and sturdiness of the buildings," he said on Friday as reported by tempointeraktif.com.
The downpour also caused a signboard at the roller-skating arena and security gates at the athletic building to tilt.
Rizal added that such issues should not be exaggerated.
The downpour has also slowed down construction, although builders guarantee that all the construction work would be completed on time.

Indonesia’s largest lender by assets, Bank Mandiri, has been appointed the official bank for the upcoming Southeast Asian Games 2011 in Jakarta and Palembang.
Mandiri managing director Zulkifli Zaini and SEA Games organizing committee (Inasoc) chairwoman Rita Subowo signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the appointment at Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta, on Sunday.
The MoU signing was witnessed by Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng.
Zulkifli said Mandiri would provide mobile ATMs, foreign currency exchange and transaction machines for credit and debit cards.
“We’re still counting the number of mobile ATMs we’ll need; we’ll draw some mobile ATMs in other regions to Jakarta and Palembang,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.
Other companies named official sponsors for the event include national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, food producer Indofood, mobile operator Indosat, Unilever, Samsung, Panasonic and Daihatsu.
